Spent a hot night-back to reality. Had to leave by 6:00 a,m. Thought we would stop at a rest area to take a nap. No more rest areas in Missouri or truck lanes to pull over. Didn’t see another rest area until we reached Arkansas about 350 miles away.

Exit 374-(5 miles south of I-90.) What can I say Beautiful, Beautiful. I would definitely stay here again. Next time a lot longer. The people were extra friendly and helpful. The cost was great $22.00 but since we were not South Dakota residence we also had to pay a $6.00 fee for day pass. There were 6 dump stations as you exited in a great location. We had only electric but we didn’t need water since our tanks were full.Plenty of space and very shaded.

Southern Hills RV and Campground

Hermosa, South Dakota

Arrival Date: Monday, August 12, 2019

Number of days at campground: 2

Total cost of stay: $80.76

Lots of over the air channels and great wi-fi, cell service. Spot #10. Should have been a pull thru but they asked us to unhook our jeep to make it easier to get in. Should have asked for one on the front side. Picky about the grass and they had shepard hooks everywhere I suppose to help people to keep off the grass when exiting. Drive-In Theatre next door, really rustic. The place was nice and clean. Gravel spots.

Had spot #3 close to pit toilet and close to camp host. No TV stations. No dump station. No wi-fi. No cell service. But it was a beautiful spacious place with mountains and close to the Shoshone River where you could fish. About 15 miles from Yellowstone east entrance. Camp host has an emergency land line. We had to travel 10 miles toward Cody to get a cell signal. The camp hosts were very friendly. 38 miles to Cody, Wyoming where there is lots to do including a Rodeo. The hosts are Gene and Kay they have hosted here for 8 years. Tom, one of the Rangers, is a ham radio operator and graciously gave us a cable to hook up 2 meters.

We paid $20.00 for electric only. If you want Electric and Water it’s $25.00 and primitive is $15.00. No tent camping was allowed. It’s all automated and you have to have the exact change because the machines do not give change. The people attending the grounds were very unfriendly and not at all helpful. You are only allowed to stay there 14 days in a calendar year. The campground was crowded and on a first come basis. No reservations. The spots were small. There were over 50 over the air TV stations. No wi-fi. Great Mountain Views. A very large town and lots of traffic. Stop lights were very long.

7 TV Stations, Full hookup free wifi that worked pull through. Place was in need of mowing and the office was messy but the lady was friendly and helpful. The wi-fi was nice. A lot of spots available and few looked like they were occupied by full timers. I think you could pay by the month.

Number of days at campground: 1

Discounts Accepted: None

Total cost of stay: $15.00

Only PBS stations. We were the only ones in the campground and were able to turn sideways. It was a bit of trouble having to go downtown and park at the City Hall to pay before we could park in the campground. We had to fill out a background sheet and get it checked before we could pay. That took about 30 minutes. We did have electric (50 amps) and water but no dump station. We forgot to take a picture. The campground has a total of 7 spots.

We stayed at this park for three weeks after we left Old Post Campgrounds and before we bought a house. It was a nice clean place but a little far from Russellville. Mostly it was for permanent residents with just a few spots for short timers. While there I had to go to the storm shelter on the property due to a tornado close by.

We have stayed at this park before and really enjoyed being there. We were able to stay for a month as long as we got permission from the park ranger. People complain about the noise from the packaging plant nearby but actually after a few days we didn’t notice it much.We enjoyed site B03 the most because it was really shady. We were able to hookup the satellite and get numerous channels. The lock and dam park was real close to the RV campground. We saw numerous deer on the property. It was a convenient location for us since we were hunting for a house to buy in Russellville.

Total cost of stay: $516.00

It’s a nice state park close to a beach on the Gulf of Mexico.  There wasn’t as many snow birds at the park at the time we went. We were in the back part of the park at Royal Cay. Lots of large pine trees and very spacious. There were as few as 4 and as many as 53 campers in this area. But most of the time around 4 or 5. The water park does not open until late May and was closed in April. We enjoyed the birds, especially woodpeckers and blue jays. TV reception was kind of off and on but a lot of channels. This part of the park is very close to a train track.  And there was a lot of trains going by but after a short while we got so use to it we didn’t notice it at night. We slept very soundly. Site 182

Isla Blanca Park

South Padre Island, Texas

Arrival Date: Sunday, January 1, 2017

Number of days at campground: 30

Discounts Accepted: Monthly discount

Total cost of stay: $548.00

This is a county park and very spacious. It is right next door to a KOA, which was not spacious and from what we were told considerably higher priced. We had spot # C-182 and it was fine except for the sand burrs and little tiny ants that were annoying. It was a little odd for us since we had to pull in our spot forward instead of backing in because the utilities were on the opposite side.We were allowed to wash all our vehicles, the rules were lax, their was an activity center and activities were planned for the whole month we were there. I believe there were about 500 spots. The park has lot of beach and bay front. Beautiful sunrises. We ate at the activity center some and played bingo a couple of times. The people were all friendly and helpful. We found a church to go to on Sunday at Port Isabel and several of the campers were in attendance. Lots of things to do close to everything on the island. There were many services for RVs including washing, repairing and propane filling that would come directly to your site. The water was extremely hard and it required softening or bottled water. Was not good to drink. Free cable TV. Internet provided for $30 a month. We were given a card to reenter the park and leaving the park we had to go over spikes, which we did not care for.

Rest Area Inez Texas south bound Hwy 59

Inez, Texas

Arrival Date: Saturday, December 31, 2016

Number of days at campground: 1

Discounts Accepted:

Total cost of stay: $0.00

We stayed at the rest area in Texas overnight. We found out Texas allows overnight parking for one night. Everything was fine and we were the only ones there until the early mornings when a charter passenger bus pulled up and it was a deafening sound from their motor or generator. We didn’t find it necessary to have a generator going because it wasn’t hot or cold that night. We were glad when they left and we could get a little sleep.

Meaher State Park

Near Mobile, Alabama

Arrival Date: Friday, November 11, 2016

Number of days at campground: 2

Not your typical state park. More like a commercial campground. It was clean and new. Level paved pull-through sites. Free wi-fi although not consistent. Expensive. Nice boardwalk around small island. Good place to watch fish, birds and nutria. Small beach but we did not go there. Lighted fishing pier. People were catching red fish and blue crab. Saw brown pelicans, seagulls, various birds along with ducks. Didn’t see any alligators although we were told there was at least one. Met nice folks at this park from Tennessee.

Suwanee River State Park

Live Oak, Florida

The park was lovely and the trails amazing. It was well cared for. The park ranger was pleasant but really short handed. If you like the sound of trains thru the night, you are in luck. They blow their whistles a lot. Plenty of restrooms all were modernized. All in all a good place to camp. Trails along the Suwanee River were well maintained and informational. There was a really large spring that feeds the river along the trail. We saw a huge Gopher Tortoise in the River. Lots of pretty birds too.

This campground has 9 beautiful sites. All are great. We were in site #8. Next time, if there is a next time, we want to be in sites 1-3 or site #9. Lots to do around the area. Two weeks have gone by really fast. Met lots of great friendly people including Jim and Norma Corbin from Georgia. They visited the same Church of Christ we did in Stuart, Florida. Gone out to eat twice with them and picnicing with them today. Tried really hard to spot a Manatee but so far no luck. Found all kind of animal tracks on the trails including feral hog and bobcat tracks. Found shells at the Stuart Beach from the Atlantic Ocean. Visited the Fort Pierce Manatee Education and Conservation Center, Aquarium and museum. Must be reserved at least 3 days in advance but not longer than 180 days in advance.
